How Much Does Construction Cost per Square Foot?

As a planning figure, a basic new house often runs about $150–$300 per square foot, and a remodel about $100–$300. Local labor, finishes, site work and permits move these numbers a lot. Treat the result as a budget check, and get written bids for the real price.

How much contingency should you budget?

Many owners keep about 10% for new work and 15–20% for older homes, where hidden problems are more likely. It is a planning habit, not a rule. Do not tell it to the contractor as extra budget.
